Many people are confused by the concept of card counting. There is a lot written about the subject, and even though there are several different ways to do it, I am going to briefly cover the basics, as I am most familiar with them. There are many different theories, but for the purposes of this article we are going to look at basic card counting.

Blackjack card counting is the process of rating the cards that have been dealt, and determining whether or not the probability of getting a card (or a face card) is favorable. There are various different systems, but the process is very similar.

Let's say someone plays $10 - $20 heads up - you count 21 - you have high cards, while he has low cards, you win as the probability of getting a high card is greater than that of a low card. You say 10, and he says 20 - you have the highest card, so you believe you have the best hand. You say "I wouldn't cross your arms!" He says "I wouldn't cross mine!"

An experience player will say this is not the way it works, and to this I say: "Go to hell!" There are ways to count cards, and if you are smart about it, you can make some profits. Let's look at the high cards first. What is a high card? A high card is when you get a card that is higher than any of the cards that have been dealt. Examples would be getting an Ace, King, or Queen in the mix. These cards are the most valuable cards to hold for that particular mix. In a 60 card game, you have a good chance of forming a good hand around 6 cards (6 x 2 = 12, or OR 6 x 1 = 10, depending on which way you want to work it).

It is time to look at the low cards. What are the least valuable cards you can draw? There are two ways to answer that. The count is in the end only your tell tale sign of the truth, but in blackjack, you want to be watching out for those sequences. The lack of true count is what will cause you to have less of an edge, or in this case, a negative edge. Stay away from high cards when they're dealt, and high cards when they're not.
